International Visitors - Japanese Students from Namiki High School!
Ohau School was very lucky on the 5th of August 2016, because we were visited by Students from Namiki High School in Japan.
The focus for the day was the exchanging of cultures, communication and knowledge.
Room 1 chose to show the Japanese students Rakau.
Rakau is the traditional Maori stick game which helped warriors to practice hand-eye coordination and speed.
The Japanese students experienced New Zealand Culture through:
- A whole school Powhiri and Assembly
- The juniors left and the seniors preformed the Algorithm Taiso - an old, humorous Japanese song to help the visitors "loosen up".
- The visitors were then split into 8 different groups. Each group came to each classroom. Room 1 preformed the Rakau song 'E Papa'.
- Each group also shared some of their culture with us including: the Japanese version of "paper, scissors, rock", Origami, questioning and answering questions room 1 had asked them, translating our names and their meanings into Japanese, and they sung a song.
Algorithm Taiso
The Japanese Students showed us how to make Cranes and Paper Planes - So we had a flying test

Matariki - Maori New Year
Today at Ohau school we celebrated Matariki - which is the Maori new year.
We celebrated by having a shared Kai and a special assembly.
Students families donated food that was then steamed in an above ground hangi - or Kai cooker.
Each class make a collaborative piece of Art work to share at assembly.
This was Room 1's Art work:
The green stars represent us at Ohau School.
They say our names in Maori by using the phrase Ko Nikki ahau - which means my name is Nikki.
The black stars have our hopes for the future written on them.
The white stars have things that w are grateful written on them.
These are some of the other classrooms art work.
